What Strata actually does.
Six screens. Every number on them is a measurement, not an estimate.
The map
A squarified treemap of any drive or folder. Big things are big rectangles. Click one to descend, use the breadcrumb to come back.
Sizes are what files occupy on disk, not the length they claim. On APFS those differ constantly: clones share storage, sparse files have holes, compressed files are smaller than they say. Summing the wrong one gives totals that disagree with Finder, which is how most tools end up being argued with.
- Under a minute for a full boot volume on most Macs
- Results stream in as they arrive, so the map is readable before the scan ends
- Hard links counted once, so Time Machine snapshots do not inflate the total
Search and large files
Two views over the same scan. Search takes a name or an extension:
final .mp4 finds MP4s with "final" in the name. Case and accents are
ignored, so resume finds résumé.pdf.
Large Files skips the typing. Everything over a size you pick, biggest first, with a bar on every row so the list is scannable at a glance instead of read one number at a time.
The uninstaller
Drag an app to the Trash and its preferences, caches, saved state and support files stay behind. Sometimes gigabytes of them, sometimes for years.
Strata reads the app's bundle identifier and searches eighteen Library locations for anything belonging to it. Every match is graded and every grade is shown. Anything below "very likely" arrives unticked, because a missed leftover costs a few megabytes and a wrong one costs data.
- Checks each match against every other installed app first, so uninstalling Word never offers Excel's preferences
- Vendor folders shared between apps are excluded outright
- System-owned files are listed but never touched, and no password is ever asked for
Live readouts
Processor, memory, battery and free space, on a one-second timer that stops the moment Strata is not the front app.
Memory is counted the way Activity Monitor counts it, app plus wired plus compressed, never total minus free. macOS deliberately fills spare RAM with cached file data, so free memory on a healthy Mac is near zero. Reporting that as "used" is how other tools tell everyone their machine is out of memory.
