Leftovers

Strata ProStrata 1.0.17Updated

Dragging an app to the Trash leaves its preferences, caches and support files in your Library. Leftovers finds those for apps that are no longer on this Mac, groups them by the app they came from, and ticks only the ones it is sure about.

How it finds them

The search starts by itself when Strata opens, with Strata Pro or the trial. It reads the same 18 Library locations the Uninstaller uses, and considers only entries named like an app's identifier, such as com.vendor.app. Then it rules out anything that could still be in use. It never offers:

  • Apple's files, a whole suite's shared files, or the folder of a shared library such as Sparkle or Electron;
  • anything from a vendor that still has an app, a package or a helper installed on this Mac;
  • anything macOS still knows an app for, anywhere on the disk.

An app sitting in the Trash does not count as installed, so its files show up here with the tag In the Trash. They stay in your Library until they are moved too.

How sure it is

With the app gone there is no identifier to be certain against, so nothing here is graded Certain. Each item carries one of three tags:

Very likely starts ticked
Caches, preferences, saved application state, logs, HTTP storage and cookies, and launch agents or daemons whose program is gone.
Likely
Application Support, containers, group containers, WebKit data, scripts, helper tools, plug-ins and other folders. These can hold things you made in the app, so check them.
Possible
Anything changed in the last 30 days, whatever it is. Something recent may belong to an app that is still around somewhere.

Point at a row to read the reason in full, for example "Named for com.spotify.client, and no installed app, package or helper comes from com.spotify."

Clearing them

  1. Read the groups

    Items are grouped by the app they came from, largest first, under the app's icon and name when macOS still remembers it, or a name read from the identifier when it does not. Tags such as Setapp or App Store say where the app came from.

  2. Choose what goes

    Select Very Likely ticks exactly the items Strata is sure about. A group's tick box ticks everything in it. Items tagged Password need an administrator: they are never ticked for you.

  3. Move to Trash

    The confirmation sheet lists everything first. After it, Put Back returns the lot if something turns out to be missed.

What if an app I still use loses its settings? It should not happen, because anything that could belong to an installed app is left out. If it ever does, put the item back from the Trash, and tell us at support@stratamaccleaner.com which app it was.

Why apps leave these behind in the first place, and where each kind lives, is explained in Dragging an app to the Trash does not uninstall it.
